Realize What is Important

Many times I see importance placed on other things rather than human relationships.

Le me give a few examples:

#1. A relative of mine recently invited my wife and me over for dinner at 7 o' clock. Because this relative lives in Vegas, it was only natural that there was a lot of traffic and I really don't know my way around the city. While we were on our way there, my relative called us at 7 and asked where we were at and why we had not called to tell them we were going to be late and in an upset tone, then hung up the phone. When we arrived, instead of being greeted at the door like guests, we were yelled at because they had took the time to make food and now it was cold and dinner was ruined. What happened here was they placed more value and importance on food than my wife and I, who are people with feelings. We didn't mean to be late, and instead of being happy that we even came over or glad that were weren't involved in a car accident, they yelled at us and made us feel like crap. We still apologized, using this concept of the importance of their feelings and trying to understand why they were upset.

#2. I notice often that a lot of families strive to get to church on time. When you have a ton of kids ( or no kids at all) it seems pretty hard to do though. At least that is what I have noticed from observation. I often see families stroll in upset with each other because they didn't get their on time. I always felt like church was a place for families to feel love and be happy together, so I think that people should remember that. Its ok to show up late, church isn't about being on time, it's about families, although being on time would be nice, don't let your tardiness defeat the whole reason why you came to church in the first time.

I have learned that we all make mistakes. People break things, have accidents, or accidentally insult you. I always try to remember the importance of the human relationship though. That is something that can not be destroyed because when it is, it is hard to be repaired. If my wife were to go crash our car into a pole today, what would my reaction be? Would I be mad that she ruined our car or would I be concerned if she were OK. If I were to be mad, I would be placing importance and value into the car over the importance and value of my wife. Inside we would all say that we would care for the person, but sometimes emotions take control of you in these moments.

Think about your relationships with people and where they are on your importance scale, especially the ones that are closest to us. Let us be forgiving, loving, understanding, and accepting of others.  Try to recognize moments when you make this mistake of valuing objects and time over the value of  people and see if by recognizing them and trying to remember not to do that, if it doesn't help change your relationships with others.

Shawn Appreciation Day

So this past Thursday I woke up in the morning because it was my time to make the lunch for the day. Monday, Wednesday, & Friday's are Bethany's days and Tuesday & Thursday are my days. Well to my half awaken surprise, Bethany was already in the kitchen confused, I exclaimed that it was my turn to make the lunch. She smiled and said that she was making it today because it was Shawn Appreciation Day. Confused i stumbled back to the bed, put then I saw this gem on the door!
I was so excited and confused and happy at the same time. I mean my birthday had just been 3 weeks ago, I thought that was good enough. All throughout the day did cute things for me and was just really appreciative of me, It made me happy to know that she notices the little things that I do. So if you are looking for a new holiday because birthdays, valentine's day, Christmas, & thanks giving aren't enough, there is Shawn Appreciation day on May 30th, or you can just create your significant other their own appreciation day whenever you want! Coming soon...Bethany Appreciation Day

Bike Gang

A few weeks ago I managed to become a proud owner of a giant tricycle! Yes! My grandma actually gave it to me, she bought it 2 years ago to ride with the family, but she never used it and it sat in the garage, brand new. All I needed to do was stick it in my car and take it to Rexburg and pump up the tires. Now I ride it to school Monday, Wednesday and Friday! My wife has also recently got a bicycle, just before I did so we decided that we should make a tradition out of it. Although we officially haven't called it a tradition, I think it has become one. It all started when I wanted to start a bike gang! I invited the people from my church to join   Bethany and I on  Saturday mornings to cruise around town and get to know each other. Some people expressed interest, others did not, but Saturday morning rolled around and we were the only ones that met at the rendezvous point. So Bethany and I just started to ride our bikes and looked at garage sales around town. After a while of riding we ending up at Great Harvest Bread Co. and we got a free slice of bread and then rode back home. Then the following Saturday we tried again and no one showed. I was bummed at first but then we rode around and did the same thing. I then realized it has been great spending some time with my wife while we ride, talk, laugh and forget about school and work. Although I still do continue to invite people, and they politely decline, I am just happy I can ride with my wife.  Our bike gang may be small but its still a gang and it seems to me that this might be a family tradition that goes on for years to come.

Are Families Important?

For my Family Relations class we had to watch this documentary called New Economic Reality: Demographic Winter. It is very interesting if you have 2 hours to spare, but it is definitely worth watching. You may draw any conclusions you would like from it, but in no way am I trying to sway anyone's opinions  because I believe that we are all entitled to our own, and that we should be tolerant and understanding of others. It mainly talks about fertility rates, population growth, and birth rates, (Yes there is a difference between fertility and birth rates. Who would of thought!?) and how it will effect our future.

On another note, if you haven't seen k-mart's new commercial, you need to! This video is way short. K-mart commercial like 35 seconds short!

Awesome, Peaceful, and...Healthy

So a few weeks ago someone asked me how married life was. I responded with awesome, peaceful and healthy. They told me those were the most random words they have heard someone use to describe marriage. I explained to them that it was awesome because I live with my best friend and we have so much fun together. We get to make decisions, go on dates, relax together, and love and support one another. Then I told them that it was peaceful because we didn't have a bunch of crazy loud roommates, we could go to bed at a reasonable time and when we came home our apartment was still clean just the way we left it in the morning. Now the healthy part has 2 stories. I attribute one part off the story to the fact that we have a vitamix (super nice blender) and we order bountiful baskets, a fruit and vegi co-op where we get a ton of fresh fruits and vegetables for cheap. We make smoothies every morning and have healthy snacks and meals. We also pack our own lunches. Now this is the story that I usually tell people because this is why I thought I was so healthy and not gaining weight (I heard that couples usually gain weight after they get married). The second part of the story is that I am portion controlled. Let me explain. One day I had told a group of people  that I work with, why I thought I was so healthy (see above), while my wife was at a meeting with an organization we volunteer for she was telling them how she portions my food in small amounts without me knowing. After my work meeting I ran over to our volunteer meeting and relayed the same information to them. Everyone started to laugh, and I asked why. They then said, "you know your wife portions your meals?" This was news to me! It was funny. Either way I am still say that marriage is awesome, peaceful, and healthy and I can attribute that to my wife Bethany!

Hello online world!

My name is Shawn Adame! I am an only child from Santa Barbara, California. I have a unique background, I am Mexican and Jewish. To top it off, I joined the Mormon Church when I was 16 years old in 2006, officially making me one of the most persecuted people in the world. My family is very diverse, my mother, whom is the reason why I am Jewish, is Caucasian and her boyfriend is African American. My father who is Mexican is married to my step-mom who is Filipino. I have a crazy life! I was married to my beautiful wife Bethany on December 28th, 2012. We have lots of fun together going on adventures and being best friends. The purpose of this blog is to act as an online journal to share my thoughts on life, family values, and anything else I feel like I should share. I hope you will enjoy my blog and perhaps you will learn something from me, and I hope that if you comment, I can learn something from you.
